The Power of Labor Journalists United
ILCA members from across the country, in town for the biennial meeting of the organization, fanned out across Pittsburgh on September 11, 2009 in media teams, working with local union activists in a dozen industries. Pens, cameras, mics and camcorders in hand, we talked with the folks who make the city run, and then rendered their words into stories. You can read, see and hear what they have to say about life on the job and off, and how they and their city are faring during the Great Recession. ILCA members will continue to add to the Pittsburgh Labor Media Center page in the days ahead as we cover the AFL-CIO convention.
Speaking at the ILCA meeting in Pittsburgh, Leo Gerard, president of the United Steel Workers, said our trade policies reward companies that move jobs overseas and our trade deficit with China has made us the world’s biggest debtor nation.
He spoke about the economic crisis, immigration, the values of working people, and the revival of America's manufacturing base. Unless we revamp our economic policies, Gerard says, the nation will never completely recover from the global economic crisis. That means we must start making things again and decrease our dependence on basic products made abroad. If we don’t make things, we will have nothing to export and no jobs to create. LABOR DAY 2009
From the AFL-CIO, read the most recent news about Labor Day 2009, including a new report that shows nearly one in three young workers will actually be at work, working on this Labor Day, instead. This statistic is just one symptom of a far deeper economic reality for workers younger than 35.
The AFL-CIO report, "Young Workers: A Lost Decade," shows that not only have young workers lost financial ground over the past 10 years—they have also lost some of their optimism.
• More than one in three young workers says they are currently living at home with their parents.
• 31 percent of young workers reports being uninsured, up from 24 percent without health insurance coverage 10 years ago.
• One-third of young workers cannot pay the bills and seven in 10 do not have enough saved to cover two months of living expenses.
